Stanley F. Szelag

Stanley F. Szelag, 76, of Evergreen Ave., Tiverton, formerly of Hall St., Fall River, died Friday, January 1, 2010. A cabinet maker, he served in the Army during the Korean War and was employed by H. P. Hood & Sons and William Bloom & Son, Inc. An avid NY Yankees fan and a great baseball player in his youth, he was cited in Ripley's Believe It or Not for "hitting for the cycle" in the same inning and was inducted into the Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. He leaves a brother, Thaddeus Szelag of Tiverton; sisters-in-law, Joyce Szelag of Westport and Joan Szelag of Fall River; nieces, Carol McCarthy, her husband David and their daughter Shannon McCarthy and Lori Ethier and her husband Peter, all of Westport; and nephews, Matthew Szelag and Thomas Szelag, both of Fall River. He was the son of the late Ignacy and Victoria (Dziadura) Szelag and the brother of the late Jean, Helen, Walter and Matthew Szelag. His funeral will be held Wednesday at 9:30 AM from the AUCLAIR FUNERAL HOME, 690 So. Main St., Fall River, with a funeral mass in Holy Cross Church of Saints Peter and Paul Parish, Pulaski St., at 10:30 AM. Burial, Notre Dame Cemetery. Visitation, Tuesday 4:00 to 8:00 PM. LARGE PARKING AREA and BARRIER-FREE ENTRANCE at the rear of funeral home. Please omit flowers. Donations may be made to Hudner Oncology Center, 795 Middle St., Fall River MA 02721.
