Sandra T. Matthews

March 11, 1945 — February 9, 2025

Fall River

Loved by all who knew her, Sandra T. Matthews (79) peacefully passed on February 9, 2025. She was the loving wife of Butch Matthews for 25 wonderful years. Her memory will live on through her four children, Stephanie Medeiros, Shaun Lawrence, Suzanne Silva, and Stephen Sacramento; eight grandchildren, Janet, Melissa, Erin Rae, Tanya, Brenda, Taryn, Ashley, and Lynsey; several great grandchildren, and one great great granddaughter. Sandy was a second mom to Robin Matthews and Carrie (C.J.) Matthews and gram to J.C. and Stacey. Sandy also leaves behind sisters Joyce Strangis, Joan McQuade, and Janet Grant, along with many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Even with such a large family, Sandy always gave time, provided support, and showed love for each and every one of them.

Sandy was born on March 11, 1945 in Norfolk County, Virginia to the late Arthur and Delores Sylvia. She lived an active life balancing work, volunteering, and enjoyment. Sandy worked at Me & Ed’s Family Restaurant in New Bedford for over 40 years. She was well-known for loyalty to her supervisors, thoughtfulness to her co-workers, and kindness to her customers. Sandy also leaves a legacy as a talented seamstress for the rollerskating, ice skating, marching band, and dance communities with her business, “Sew Unique Designs.” Over the years, Sandy made thousands of costumes for hundreds of performers, always insuring that they felt confident and comfortable as they prepared to compete.

Sandy truly believed it was better to give than to receive, as she volunteered for various local causes and charitable organizations. She organized and participated in many fundraisers as a member of St. Anne’s Fraternity and especially admired St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and supported the “Cruisin’ for St. Jude” program.

Sandy enjoyed all life had to offer with Butch, her family, and her friends. Many wonderful memories were made at the “the cottage” in Lakeville. She loved going on cruises, playing cards at the I.P.C. Club, and taking trips to Foxwoods.

She was a long-time fan of her favorite soap operas, rarely missing an episode. Sandy knew how to throw a great party too - for Christmas, the Super Bowl, and special family occasions.

Sandy deeply loved and was loved deeply. She will be remembered most for her selflessness and strong faith. While loved ones’ hearts will mourn her loss, they can take comfort in knowing she is not suffering and is with Jesus.
