Robert A. Smith, Sr.

Robert A. Smith, Sr., 96, of Somerset, husband of Mary (McDonald) Smith, died Friday, December 23, 2011. An Army veteran of WW II, TSgt. Smith served in Italy with the 88th. Infantry Division, receiving the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Good Conduct medals. He was a Massachusetts Department of Corrections officer at MCI- Norfolk. An avid golfer and card player, he was a member of the Montaup Country Club and the Somerset Pitch League. He enjoyed reading and was a Red Sox and Bruins fan. Besides his wife of 64 years, he leaves 2 children, Robert Smith, Jr. (wife Gail) of Somerset, and Marilyn King-Simoes (late husband Gil) of Portsmouth, RI; 3 grandchildren, Jennifer Murphy (husband Matt) of NY, Jake Smith of RI, and Jillian Smith of Somerset; and nieces and nephews. He was the son of the late Robert M. and Jane (Parkhurst) Smith; and the brother of the late Grace Booth, Edna Frates, Alice Howarth and Dorothy, Alan, and Irving Smith. His funeral was private.
