Robert E. Bettencourt, Sr., 78, of Lake Rd., Tiverton, formerly of Westport, passed away Monday, October 24 at the Rhode Island Veterans Home, Bristol. A Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War, he worked in construction, was employed by Kinder Tree Service, and made ice cream at Gray's Ice Cream for many years. At the Seekonk Speedway, he was his son's biggest fan and supporter, proudly enjoying two championships and many feature wins. An avid NASCAR fan, he attended numerous Daytona 500's. Known as the "Mayor of South Shore Beach", he was a Red Sox and Dallas Cowboys fan, and a Women's Softball coach. He leaves his son, Robert E. Bettencourt, Jr. and his wife Jan of Tiverton; grandchildren, Samantha and Robert Bettencourt, III, Cody Tripp and Adam Rioux; siblings, Elsie and Roland Bettencourt of Westport and Lucy Bettencourt of Lincoln, RI; and nieces and nephews. He was the son of the late Louis and Lucy (Romano) Bettencourt; and the brother of the late John, Joseph "Sonny" and Louis "Jiggs" Bettencourt. His funeral will be held Friday at 8:30 AM from the AUCLAIR FUNERAL HOME, 690 So. Main St., Fall River, with a funeral mass in St. Madeleine Sophie Church, Tiverton, at 10:00 AM. Burial, Beech Grove Cemetery, Westport. Visitation, Thursday 4:00 to 8:00 PM. LARGE PARKING AREA and BARRIER-FREE ENTRANCE at the rear of funeral home.
