Rev. Jan Wilczek, 77, passed on to his eternal rest on Friday, November 4th after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born in Jankowo, Poland he was the son of he late Jozef and Wladyslawa (Walkuska) Wilczek. He came to the United States in 1971, where he briefly lived in New Britain, CT until moving to New Bedford in 1974 where he was the pastor of the Holy Cross Polish National Catholic Church for 32 years as well as the visiting pastor of the Holy Trinity Parish in Fall River. He was also employed at Carol Cable and AFC Cable Systems in New Bedford for several years before his retirement in 2006.
He enjoyed puzzles of any kind, watching nature documentaries and international sporting events but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years Maria Wilczek, his son Adam Wilczek of Fairhaven, and his daughter Joanna Barker and her husband Ryan of New Bedford. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Aidan Wilczek and Gabrielle & Maya Barker, as well as Janelle & Rachel Mercer. His grandchildren were the joys of his life and his greatest achievement was coming out of retirement to be the "nanny" to his 3 young grandchildren.
He is also survived by his 2 sisters Jadwiga Przybyloska of Poland and Krystyna Szczesniak and her husband Henryk of Austria, as well as his sister-in-law Celina Wilczek of Poland and many nieces and nephews in Poland and Austria. He is pre-deceased by his brother Mieczyslaw Wilczek.
His funeral will be held Saturday at 9:00 a.m. from the Auclair Funeral Home, 690 So. Main St., Fall River, with a funeral mass at the Blessed Trinity Church, 1340 Plymouth Avenue, Fall River at 10:00 a.m. Interment at the Polish National Catholic Cemetery, New Bedford.
Visitation, Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
