Peter R. “Pete” Chouinard, 76, husband of Helena D. (Dumont) Chouinard, passed into eternal rest on Wednesday, December 16, 2020.
He was proud owner and founder of Pete 's Nursery & Garden Center in Westport for 50 years, and enjoyed working alongside his family over the years. His love of gardening and the outdoors was infectious, bringing joy to numerous loyal customers through his breathtaking landscape designs. He loved his lifelong work wholeheartedly, and continued to do so right up until his passing.
He was also a U.S. Army Veteran and served during the Vietnam War. During his service to his country, he was the head groundskeeper and landscape/floral designer for the commanding general's estate in Fort Benning, Georgia. His appreciation for the U.S. military and all Veterans became one of his most important passions. It included devoting time and personal resources to voluntarily maintain the upkeep of the Kerr Mill Memorial on Brayton Avenue, Fall River for the past 10 years.
His hobbies over the years included skiing, boating, water-skiing, playing Frisbee, bowling and hiking with his family.
He was a loving husband, a devoted father, a beloved pepere, and a well-respected businessman and landlord.
Besides his wife of 47 years, Pete leaves behind four children, Audra A. Lewis (husband Jason), Heath P. Chouinard (wife Melissa), Kurt D. Chouinard (wife Jayne) and Sarah J. Girouard (husband Michael );
ten grandchildren, Jacob, Luc, Aiden, Delaney, Holley, Lily, Christian, Zachary, Sophia and Gabriel;
a brother, Paul Chouinard (wife Jeannine) and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Joan Martel, Simmone Furtado and Donald Chouinard and the son of the late Roland and Bertha (McCarthy) Chouinard.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Mass on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at 10:30 A.M. at Saint John Neumann Church, 157 Middleboro Rd, East Freetown, MA 02717 . Face coverings and social distancing required. Burial, Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Visitation is omitted.
