Leagatha (Mungo) Ardrey

Leagatha (Mungo) Ardrey, 93, of Newport, RI, wife of the late John Ardrey, was peacefully called home to the Lord on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at John Clark Retirement Center with family at her side.

She was born on February 18, 1923 in Lancaster County, South Carolina to Conly and Daisy (Hough) Mungo. Leagatha was wed to John Ardrey, on January 14, 1942 in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and relocated to North Carolina before settling in Newport, Rhode Island. She was preceded in death by her husband after 42 years of marriage. Leagatha was also preceded in death by her son John Robert Ardrey.

She is survived by seven children, Shelly Ardrey of Charlotte NC, Diane Kendall of Newport RI, Maryann Ardrey of San Diego CA, Debra Ardrey of Dallas TX, Veronica Ardrey and Susan Ardrey, both of Newport RI, Carolyn Smith (Wayne) of Dallas TX, fifteen grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves an extensive list of family and friends.

Leagatha was known by many for her excellent culinary skills. All who came to her home were welcomed and enjoyed the fruits of her passion for home cooking. In addition to her meticulous care for her family, she provided service to her community as a cook for the Head Start Program in Newport County. After retiring from Head Start she continued her service to youth as a foster grandparent. She was also a longtime servant on the Deaconess Board of Community Baptist Church.

Visitation and Homegoing Celebration is planned for Thursday, January 26, 2017 from 11:00 am to1:00 pm at the Community Baptist Church, 50 Dr. Marcus F. Wheatland Blvd., Newport, RI 02840. Repast immediately following in the Community Baptist Church Annex.
