Harnett, Katherine M., 64, of Warren, RI passed away peacefully, Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Inpatient Center. In her final days she was surrounded by her family and many friends. Kathy was born January 18, 1947 in Fall River, the daughter of Marita (Vokes) Harnett and the late Thomas E. Harnett. She is survived by her mother and her sister Christine Harnett of Fall River, her companion James Hagan of Bristol, RI, her sister-in- law Arlene Harnett of Somerset MA, her nephew Keith Harnett and his wife Bridget of Fall River, her niece Kerri Harnett of Somerset, MA, her great nephew Devin Harnett and great niece Bri-Ann Harnett. Kathy was predeceased by her father and her brother Robert. Kathy was very close with her father's sister Ann Marcucci and her cousins Thomas, Joseph, Michael and John Marcucci. Kathy graduated from Mount Saint Mary Academy and earned her undergraduate degree from Southeastern Massachusetts University (now UMass-Dartmouth). She also earned a Masters degree from Rhode Island College. Immediately following her graduation from SMU, Kathy went to work in the Warren RI public schools as an elementary teacher. She primarily taught first grade. She taught at the Liberty Street School and later at the Child Street School. She also served as the Principal of Child and Main Street schools. Kathy's special expertise was as a Reading Teacher. She was past-president of the Sakonnet Council of the International Reading Association and a presenter at National Reading Conferences. She helped to start a gifted and talented program in the Warren schools as well as an artist in residence program. Kathy retired after twenty-nine years and then went on to teach first grade at Saints Peter and Paul School in Fall River for another ten years only leaving last August because of her illness. Kathy truly loved teaching. Proofs of her legacy are the number of teachers in the area schools who are her former students. Her funeral will be held Saturday at 11:00 AM from the AUCLAIR FUNERAL HOME, 690 So. Main St., Fall River, with a Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Cross Church of Saints Peter and Paul Parish, Fall River, at 12:00 noon. Interment immediately following at Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation, Friday 4:00 to 8:00 PM. LARGE PARKING AREA and BARRIER-FREE ENTRANCE at the rear of funeral home.
