Joseph C. Almeida

Joseph C. Almeida, 81, of Highland Ave. Westport, formerly of 17th St., Fall River, died Monday, June 30, 2008 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Carol Ann C. (Lajoie) Almeida. He was a Navy veteran of WWII and a Fall River Firefighter for 25 years, attaining the rank of Captain of Rescue 1, Center Station. A member of the City of Fall River Retirement Board for 32 years, he also served as Chairman for 18 years. He was a director of the Fall River Municipal Credit Union for 26 years. He was member of the Retired Fall River Municipal Employees Assn. and worked in the Bristol County Treasurer's Office for 26 years. He was a member of the Mass. Permanent Firefighter's Assn., the Fall River Permanent Firefighter's Benefit Assn. and the Retired State, County and Municipal Employees Assn. of Mass. Serving a total of 37 ½ years of public service. An avid woodcarver and photographer, he was a member of the National Woodcarving Assn. and the Paskamanset Bird Club. Besides his wife of 40 years, he leaves 6 children, Thomas J. Almeida, Linda S. LePage, Janice Roback, Craig A. Almeida, Darren Almeida and Richard C. Almeida; and 5 grandchildren. He was the son of the late Joseph and Marguerite Coleman Almeida and the brother of the late Marguerite DeGrote. His funeral will be held Saturday at 8:30 AM from the AUCLAIR FUNERAL HOME, 690 So. Main St., Fall River with a funeral mass in St. George Church, Highland Ave. Westport at 10:00 AM. Burial in Beech Grove Cemetery. Visitation Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM LARGE PARKING AREA and BARRIER-FREE ENTRANCE at the rear of funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Westport Fire Dept.
