Jeannine Scanlon, of Tiverton, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully at home in her ninetieth year, on April 24, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. Jeannine was married to the late Joseph Scanlon for 63 years. Born in Ville Saint-Jean-Vianney, Quebec, Canada, she was a daughter of Joseph Isador Pelletier and Cecilia (Houde) Pelletier, and sister of Martha (Pelletier) Berube and Yvette (Pelletier) Wood. Baptized as Jeannine, though recorded as Marie Cecile by the visiting priest, she spent her youth as both Jeannine (Jin) to the family and friends who loved her, and Cecile to the nuns at church and school. Jeannine was a graduate of the former Jesus Mary Academy in Fall River. While in high school, she took a job at the Fall River National Bank where she met her beloved Joe. Together, they were devoted to raising the family they always wanted, as they had long planned to do. Jeannine returned to work outside the home in the 1980s as a clerk at Rhode Island Superior Court for several years.
Over the years, Jeannine enjoyed ice skating, tennis and golf, in addition to playing bridge, reading and traveling. Always the lady, Jeannine once had tea at the White House, hosted by Lady Bird Johnson. An avid Boston sports fan, Jeannine’s TV was often tuned to NESN, as it was on her final evening when the Sox rallied to a win. And years ago, even though she’d be rooting for the Bruins, Jeannine would still proudly join her dad in singing “O, Canada” at the Old Garden whenever the Canucks or Habs came to town. Above all, she and her husband enjoyed time with their children & grandchildren; also with their siblings and life-long circle of friends, whether in the Fall River area or when they moved the party down to Florida. Jeannine was a parishioner at Holy Ghost Parish in Tiverton, Rhode Island, and St. David’s Parish in Davie, FL.
Jeannine leaves behind her children Deborah Janick and her husband Michael, Stephen Scanlon and his wife Linda, Susan Scanlon and her husband Ivan Urrego, all of Tiverton, RI. She also leaves behind her grandchildren Amanda Scanlon, Sean Scanlon and his wife Kelsie, Alyssa Pacheco and her husband Christopher, Bryan Janick, Elizabeth Janick, Kayana Urrego and Chana Urrego, and her three great-grandchildren Lylah Jeannine Pacheco, Amelia Scanlon and Dustyn Scanlon. Additionally she is survived by her sisters and several nieces and nephews.
