ST. ALBANS, VT - Gladys M. (Burkett) Barre, 91, formerly of Fall River, widow of Albert J. Barre, passed away on Thursday, January 14, 2010 at the Redstone Villa Nursing Home in St. Albans, VT after a decade-long battle with Alzheimer's. Gladys spent her entire life in Fall River prior to moving to Vermont 5 years ago. She is survived by her daughter, Donna M. Barre, PhD and son-in-law Kenneth Miller II, PhD of St. Albans, VT; three grandchildren Joseph Barre (Rosemarie) of W. Warwick, RI, Kimberley Pennock (Maxwell) of Mattapoisett, MA and Michael Barre (Dawn) of Fall River, MA; six great-grandchildren Alex Barre, Violette and Lily Pennock, Joseph, Kimberly and Stephen Beltrami, and a great-great grandson Luca Beltrami. She was also predeceased by her son, Aime H. Barre (former wife late Marie, her parents Mary Louise (Vancelette) and Fred Burkett, and her siblings Dorothy Przekop, Alfred and Harold Burkett. Gladys worked at Firestone Rubber during WWII; was the saleswoman of the year at Singer Sewing Machine in Fall River in the late 1950's, and worked for 25 years for Raytheon, in Dighton and Waltham. After retiring, she spent many years volunteering at St. Anne's Hospital. Mrs. Barre was a long-time parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Church until its closure and was very active in its social and volunteer activities, including the Women's Guild. She was a Marion Medal recipient. In previous years "Glady" spent many hours crocheting and bestowed her beautiful afghans and other hand-made items upon her family and friends. "Mémère" as she was lovingly referred to by her grandchildren, her Sandy Beach neighbors and many others, was the heart of her family and cared for everyone around her. Her funeral will be held Monday at 10:00 AM from the AUCLAIR FUNERAL HOME, 690 So. Main St., Fall River, with a funeral mass in Good Shepherd Church at 11:00 AM. Visitation, Sunday 3:00 to 7:00 PM.
