Edward G. Canuel

Edward G. Canuel, 89, of Fall River, husband of the late Irene (Levesque) Canuel, entered into rest, May 1, 2018.

An Army Chemical Corps veteran of the Korean War, he was a Chemical, Biological and Radiological Warfare Instructor.

A graduate of St. Jean Baptiste Grammar School and Assumption Preparatory High School, he studied at Msgr. Prevost High School, Assumption College, St. Mary University, Calvin Coolidge College and Bridgewater State Teachers' College, earning a Bachelors Degree from St. Mary's College.

An educator for 32 years, he taught at Berkley Elementary School and Berkley Junior High School and was principal at the Edward G. Canuel Primary School, the Berkley Elementary School, Berkley Middle School and Berkley Community School.

He served the former St. Jean Baptiste Parish as CCD Coordinator, Advisory Council, Bazaar and Holy Trinity Parish as Catholic Charities Appeal chairman. He also served as president and director of St. Jean Baptiste Credit Union. He also served as Advocate for Council 295, Knights of Columbus.
The Berkley School Committee named the Edward G. Canuel Primary School and the Berkley Community School Gymnasium in his honor. The Edward G. Canuel Scholarship is presented each year by the Berkley Scholarship Fund, and the Edward G. Canuel Principal's Award is presented each year to a graduate of the Berkley Community School.

He received the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Golden Dome Certificate from the State Senate and was recipient of a State Senate Official Citation in recognition for outstanding service and many contributions to the Berkley Community, Town of Berkley Certificate of Recognition and was named Honorary Citizen of the Town of Berkley.

He leaves four children, Dr. Elizabeth Canuel Duffy and her husband Dr. Emmett Duffy of Gloucester Point, VA, Edward Canuel and his wife Barbara of Somerset, Linda Paiva and her husband Christopher of Fairhaven, MA and Susan Belanger and her husband Peter of Berkley; grandchildren, Chelsea Belanger, Brittany Belanger, Nicholas Paiva, Ryan Paiva, Conor Duffy, Emily Canuel and Julia Canuel; and nieces and nephews. He was the son of the late George and Nalda (Bisson) Canuel and the brother of the late Gilbert and Alfred Canuel.

His funeral will be held Saturday at 7:30 A.M. from the Auclair Funeral Home, 690 So. Main St., Fall River, with a funeral mass at Holy Trinity Church at 8:30 a.m. Interment, Notre Dame Cemetery.
