Dr. John Chorlton Manning

Dr. John Chorlton Manning, 80, of New Brighton, Minnesota, formerly of Fall River, died Monday, September 6, 2010. A Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War, Colonel Manning had commanded the Newport RI Marine Corps detachment. A graduate of St. Mary Cathedral Grammar School, Coyle High School and Providence College, Dr. Manning went on to earn a master's in education from Bridgewater State College and his doctor in education from Boston University. An international authority on beginning reading instruction, Dr. Manning was professor at the University of Minnesota for many years. In Fall River he began teaching at Slade Grammar School and Morton Junior High School and was involved in the Little Theater. A visiting professor and lecturer at more than 300 major colleges, he wrote numerous journal articles, book chapters and curriculum publications and was an author and senior educational consultant to Scott Foresman Publishers. Past president of the International Reading Association, he was the recipient of the association's Outstanding Teacher Educator in Reading Award and a Lifetime Award for his work in literacy. The association also started the John Chorlton Manning Public School Service Award to honor and carry on his work. He was a member of the National Council of Teachers of English, National Conference for Research in English, the American Educational Research Assn., and an honorary member of the California and Minnesota Congresses of Parents, Teachers and Students. He was the beloved companion of Verla Klassen of New Brighton; the father of Katharine C. "Kacey" Manning of Boston, Lisa Manning of Fall River and Jay C. Manning (wife Phyllis) of Centreville, VA; the grandfather of Patrick L., Brendan J. and Kaitlin E. Manning; the brother of Mary Manning of Fall River, Wendy King of Falmouth, Connie Arnoe of Westport, MA and James Manning of Tiverton; the son of the late John W. and Ida (Chorlton) Manning and the former husband of Gloria (Audet) Manning of Fall River and Marie Manning of California. Memorial service, Friday, 9-17-10, at 3:30PM,at St. Lawrence Church & Newman Center, 1203 5th.
