Carolina E. Clarke

December 26, 1934 — March 8, 2025

Tiverton

Carolina E. Clarke, of Tiverton, Rhode Island, affectionately known as Carol, passed away on March 8, 2025, at the age of 90, leaving behind a legacy that will forever reside in the hearts of those who cherished her. Born on December 26, 1934, in Manila, Philippines, Carol witnessed a tumultuous childhood, surviving the invasion of Manila at just seven years old. The heart-wrenching memory of watching her home burn is a testament to her resilience and strength, traits that would define her life.

At the tender age of 16, Carol made the journey across the sea to join her father and step-mother in Middleboro, MA. It was here that she would shape her future, finding love in the most unexpected place. Meeting Watecee B. Clarke at a pow-wow in Mashpee marked the beginning of a beautiful love story. Their union was filled with joy, but tragically, Carol lost Watecee too soon, just 50 years ago when she was only 40. Despite this immense sorrow, she forged ahead and called Tiverton her home for the past 68 years, carrying with her the enduring spirit of their love.

Carol dedicated 18 years of her life to her work, first as a cashier at McGreavy’s Package Store in Tiverton, and then at the Wine & Spirits Shop on the Newport Naval Base. She was a beloved figure to her customers, known for her warm smile and friendly demeanor. Beyond her career, Carol had passions that brought her joy—shopping brought her delight, and spending time at the slot machines provided her with entertainment and a sense of adventure. Her love for cooking was legendary; family gatherings were always highlighted by her delicious meals that nourished both the body and soul.

Carol was the proud mother of three children: Christopher R. Ortiz, who predeceased her, and his wife Jane C. Wainfor; Wenonah B. Clarke-Smith, along with her husband Dennis J. Smith; and Glenn B. Clarke. She was also a devoted grandmother to her four grandchildren, Bethany Ortiz, Angela Ortiz-Sailsman, Christopher Wainfor, and Jessica Wainfor. Carol's legacy continues to flourish through her multiple great and great-great-grandchildren, who carry forward the love and warmth she poured into her family. She has also brought with her a grand-dog Gracie and left behind her other grand-dog Jessie.

There will be a private interment and then a celebration of life in a few months.
