Aurora Mae (Pratt) Amarantes Soares, 95, of Fall River, widow of Januario "Jerry" Amarantes and Elias "Eli" Soares, died Monday, July 7, 2008.
A Fall River Public School teacher, retiring in 1976, she was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant School and New Bedford High School, and earned a bachelor of science degree from Bridgewater State College at 56 years of age.
She kept a vegetable and flower garden and tended chickens during WW II. She was an avid reader and enjoyed arts and crafts, donating two of her hand-braided rugs to the Lafayette-Durfee House.
She was a member of the Council on Aging, North End Senior Center, a member of St. Joseph Parish, past secretary of the Women's Guild of the former St. Mathieu Parish and a member of the Bristol Chapter of Retired Educators Assn. of Mass. and Retired State, County and Municipal Assn. of Mass.
Aurora leaves a son, James Amarantes and his wife Angela of Tiverton; a daughter, Carole Daly and her husband Daniel of Newport; a daughter-in-law, Lorraine Amarantes of Fall River; 8 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was the mother of the late Leo Amarantes, grandmother of the late Steven Amarantes, great-grandmother of the late Cassie Amarantes and sister of the late Bernadette Duchaine, Juliette Millette and Arthur and Leo Pratt.
Her funeral will be held Friday at 9:00 AM from the AUCLAIR FUNERAL HOME, 690 So. Main St., Fall River, with a funeral mass in St. Joseph Church at 10:00 AM. Burial, St. Patrick Cemetery.
Visitation, Thursday 5:00 to 8:00 PM. LARGE PARKING AREA AND BARRIER-FREE ENTRANCE at the rear of funeral home. Donations may be made to Sunshine Fund, Fall River Jewish Home, 538 Robeson St., Fall River MA 02720.
